The Clayton Police Department consists of three sections. each section provides public safety services on a 24 hour basis.

The Patrol Section employs 8 full-time commissioned officers and one full time Community Service Officer. This officer is responsible for Animal Control, Code Enforcement and prisoner transport. Officers are assigned to a patrol shift and fall under the supervision of the Corporal or Lieutenant. Officers are provided with all equipment in order to better perform their duties. Department take home vehicles are equipped with computers and technology in order to assist officers with patrol duties. The patrol section is responsible for patrolling a 5 square mile jurisdiction in order to detect and deter criminal activity.

Several members of the patrol division are tactically trained and are capable of responding as an entry team and to threats in the community that require additional training and resources.

The Communications Section (Union county consolidated dispatch center) employs four full-time and one part-time personnel that provide dispatch services for all emergency services in Union County. The Communications Section is the service answering point of 911 calls from the entire county and is supervised by a communications Sergeant. This section also operates 24/7 and is staffed by state certified dispatch personnel.

The Clayton/Union County detention center is staffed by 4 full-time detention center officers and supervised by a Detention Sergeant. The facility is capable of housing up to 20 inmates. The detention center is the only holding facility for Union County.

A full-time records clerk staffs the records division. The records clerk is also tasked with performing evidence custodian duties, law enforcement documentation is generated through the clerk’s office and is forwarded to the appropriate person(s).

The Chief of Police heads the Department and all sections with experience in various aspects of law enforcement.

The Town of Clayton enjoys a low crime rate and a friendly atmosphere. All officers participate in the community-policing program to ensure that communication does not fail between law enforcement and the citizens that we serve.
